Blueberries are one of the things I love about summer. To be honest, I don't really like summer at all that much (the humidity! the bugs!) but if the day ever comes that I don't get excited about berry season you'll know that I'm terminally ill. In fact, blueberries are good in pretty much everything ever: pancakes, muffins, bread, smoothies, and oatmeal. Yes, oatmeal. With cinnamon and sugar and lots of cream. And don't forget the butter. Oh my, let's eat right now.

Anyway, oatmeal is one of those easy to make breakfasts perfect for any season. It quite literally only takes minutes before the sweet scent of cinnamon permeates the home, creating a welcoming environment not only for celebrating the hottest days of summer, but perfect for accepting that our good friend fall is on his way to nip our noses and bring us sweet potatoes and pumpkins and apples. Sigh, here I go again, pining away for fall when I'm trying so hard to learn to enjoy the moment. It's a learning curve. Either way, consider this a good recipe for transition: we are gobbling up the last bites of berries and melons in hopes that winter keeps it breath held just a little while longer all the while accepting that the arrival is inevitable and choosing to blend fall and summer flavors for a delicious outcome.

Or just have a quiet brunch with your partner for no reason whatsoever. Not everything has to be fit for the Kinfolk table.

P.S. If you need it to be vegan, please feel free to use coconut cream and no butter. Coconut cream is divine in oatmeal.

Ingredients:

  • 1 serving of oatmeal, cooked per the package instructions
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 2 handfuls blueberries
  • sugar to taste
Cook the oatmeal per the package, being careful not to let the water boil too much before adding the oats. You don't want them parched and dry! When the oatmeal is cooked toss in your 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon stir well, making sure each oat is coated with the spice. Add your butter and blueberries (Really, add as many or as few blueberries as you like. Experiment) and stir well before transferring to your bowl. Serve with coffee or tea.

Just for fun, here is an Instagram pic from earlier this week. Maybe I got a little too carried away with the Afterlight filters.
