The Cure for Anything is Salt Water
Monday, May 19, 2014“The cure for anything is salt water - tears, sweat, or the sea.”
― Isak Dinesen, Seven Gothic TalesYep, I am wishing to massage my toes on the sand and let the sea cleanse my insides. I need it.

*edit* Something was wacky with the picture. Sorry guys! It's fixed now.
Monday Quote: Words Are Only Painted Fire
Monday, May 12, 2014Ever since I saw this post on the BLDG 25 Free People blog, I knew I needed to feature this quote. However, I have had a hard time truly understanding the message enough to put my speculations into words. It's still difficult, to be honest, but what I have gathered is that describing something is a beautiful and powerful art, but nothing compares to being in the moment. One can never understand the "fire" a painting/story/song portrays unless they were there to feel everything at the original occurence. Once you see the fire, it becomes a part of your heart. And while art can replicate these emotions, it will never compare to a true life, raw experience.
What do you think?

Monday Quote: It is horrifying that we have to fight..
Monday, April 7, 2014“It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment.”
― Ansel Adams
I truly try to remain politically neutral on matters of politics in my online life. However, when I saw this on the sidewalks of the North Lime Area of town, I couldn't resist snapping a picture, and I do not find it too controversial. I mean, if we all enjoy living on this planet, maybe it really should be so hard to take care of it.
Also, I caught this little guy visiting us Sunday morning. I was very lucky because he let me get quite close.
One of those March Days + Bang Bang Bang
Monday, March 24, 2014
Yes, it has exactly been like that. Scumbag weather, tricking us into wearing shorts only to make us go back inside and change. How is the spring weather where you live?
Also, I have included this fun K'Naan song that is totally unrelated but a fun kickstart to your week. See? I do listen to artists other than Bob Dylan and Conor Oberst. I even go outside the folk genre lol. If you want something more, serious, go to the second link. Such a sobering song.
It takes a great deal of courage...

Happy St. Patrick's Day all. To celebrate, I thought it appropriate to share a quote from one of the most famous Irishmen in the 20th century. This is a nice reminder that the whole world is ugly, stained with smears of transgression, but the little things and the heartaches are part of what makes life beautiful and tainted all at the same time. It's what we are, and what we choose to do for ourselves that makes us embrace the world despite the hate. In fact, the negativity we find helps us develop into something better, if we only allow it to do so.
I have also included my favorite Flogging Molly song because hey, it's St. Patrick's Day. And this song is so beautiful it makes me want to cry.

There was nowhere to go but everywhere + a song

As someone who suffers from depression bouts, this is important to me. When you feel like life is stagnating, remember that we are all going somewhere. It doesn't even matter what the destination is, the journey is often the most interesting part.
Also, I have not been able to get this totally unrelated song out of my head so here you go.

Easy, Lucky, Free
Did it all get real, I guess it's real enough
They got refrigerators full of blood
Another century spent pointing guns
At anything that moves
Sometimes I worry that I've lost the plot
My twitching muscles tease my flippant thoughts
I never really dreamed of heaven much
Until we put him in the ground
But it's all I'm doing now
Listening for patterns in the sound
Of an endless static sea
But once the satellite's deceased
It blows like garbage through the streets
Of the night sky to infinity
But don't you weep (don't you weep for them)
There is nothing as lucky
Don't you weep
There is nothing as lucky, as easy, or free
Don't be a criminal in this police state
You better shop and eat and procreate
You got vacation days then you might escape
To a condo on the coast
I set my watch to the atomic clock
I hear the crowd count down 'til the bomb gets dropped
I always figured that there'd be time enough
I never let it get me down
But I can't help it now
Looking for faces in the clouds
I got some friends I barely see
But we're all planning to meet
We'll lay in bags as dead as leaves
All together for eternity
But don't you weep
There is no one as lucky
Honey, don't you weep
There is nothing as lucky, as easy, or free
They got refrigerators full of blood
Another century spent pointing guns
At anything that moves

Monday Quote:Sunrise looks spectacular
Monday, February 24, 2014“Sunrise looks spectacular in the nature; sunrise looks spectacular in the photos; sunrise looks spectacular in our dreams; sunrise looks spectacular in the paintings, because it really is spectacular!”
― Mehmet Murat ildan
Sunrise is nature's gift to all sentient creation. It's a free act of beauty that can fill the soul with admiration and respect for Mother Earth and there is nothing quite like waking up before the sun and watching it peep out through the loophole in our dreams. This week, I encourage you to try and enjoy at least one sunrise. Pay attention to every yawn, stretch, and peep as the light slowly breaks through the darkness restoring the day. In this moment, be perfectly silent, soaking in the beauty of it before life's hassles pull you away.
Monday Inspiration: A Hot Bath Cures Many Things
Monday, February 3, 2014“I am sure there are things that can't be cured by a good bath but I can't think of one.” Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar.
I think this is quite right. With the polar vortex still nipping at my ankles, a hot bath becomes more and more appealing as the daylight slowly changes to purple. Not only is it warming, but it provides an opportunity to meditate and focus on every hint of a feeling. Baths soothe both the body and soul in every detail of the process.
The steam rising from the water as the first splash hits the tub is a welcome exchange for the smoke escaping my nose just minutes ago. Your foot constricts into what feels like a tiny ball of molecules when you first touch the water. The extremes are too great - you must withdraw and gradually acclimate to the temperature. However, this is comforting because you know that in a few minutes the blood in your feet will expand and absorb the warmth, drowning what was frigid and penetrating deep into your bones. Let the water cover your face, causing mascara to flow down your face alla Alice Cooper. Saturate every pore, transferring the hear from the water into your skin. When you are done, let the water slowly drip away, with every millimeter the water drops reminding you of warmer times.
Once you step out of the bath, slather the body is a moisturizer to combat the dryness in the air. It's like slipping on a second skin - a new, warmer layer of skin. Cozy up in a slip or sweater with thighs and cuddle under a blanket. Winter may be especially tough this year, but a bath cures the ailment, restoring life into once brittle limbs.
Monday Inspiration: Dance the winter blues away
Monday, January 20, 2014As the days slowly get longer and we awake to pinker skies instead of grey hazes, we turn our minds to spring and long for the warm air to kiss our faces. While I have already talked about why we should embrace winter, this week I want to encourage you to dance the winter blues away. Whether you do actual ballroom, or ballet, and just want to blast top 40 radio in your apartment, dance. Feel the movements bring life into your toes, your legs, your core, your heart, and feel warmth sink into your limbs. Enjoy it, especially on these cold, cold nights. Before you know it, you will have danced the winter away and welcomes spring's birth.

Monday Inspiration: Just Be
Monday, January 13, 2014When I first saw this quote many years ago, I knew it would follow me for the rest of my life. I know it may seem trendy, but 2013 was all about learning to live more, and think about it less. Savoring what is happening right now without worrying about the consequences is a beautiful thing not to be disturbed by the rest of the world grinding away at your core. Naturally, this mindset must be exercised within reason i.e. please don't eat cookies for a week because you might be dead next week, but please do use the last of the coffee without the thought of having to go and buy more disturb your peace of mind.
It is also helpful to note that while I love to blog, sometimes it is best to do something without a camera. To enjoy a flower on the side of the road or a bird on your porch can be almost meditative. I don't always need an electronic device to interrupt the stillness. This is kind of how I feel while traveling the world. Tourists with cameras taking 30 shots of the David in Florence. Photographing every stone of the Colosseum. Not missing a singe grave plot in the Recoleta Cemetery. It's almost sad because we get so consumed in capturing every detail for the future. Thus, they spend their entire trip "describing life", instead of living it at that particular instant. So the next time you see something truly breathtaking, inhale deeply and devour each detail for yourself.
Monday Inspiration
Monday, December 2, 2013Many people feel guilty for wanting to indulge in their own happiness. As a society, we have been raised to always think of others first even when it negatively affects us. Well, it's time to shake that off and put on a new skin, fresh and dewy and full of hope. You see, never engaging in any activity that causes you to smile creates a whirlwind of depression. You will see everyone around you getting exactly what they want (at least, to you they will seem to have exactly what they want) and develop what I like to call a "why me" syndrome.
Please understand that making yourself happy is not being selfish. Selfishness is not pursuing your own life goals. It's when you hurt others to make your own desires happen. If you do not bring your own benefits into consideration, you will make yourself miserable and everyone around you.
This week, I challenge you to do one thing for yourself. Take a few minutes each day to do something that makes you happy. It can be making your favorite cup of tea every morning, or taking the time to braid your hair in a fun new way. Whatever you choose, feel positive about it and enter the world feeling refreshed and full of a new life - the new you. I guarantee others will notice. Never forget that emotions are contagious. If you go into work/school/whatever you do feeling like you're sitting on top of the world, you will improve other people's day too! Sounds like a winner for all involved.
Monday Inspiration
Monday, November 25, 2013Hello all, it's time to start your week right. I felt this picture was appropriate as we begin to spend our days focusing on Thanksgiving - a time to reflect and give thanks for what we have. In order to achieve inner wellness, it is important to maintain a list of what you are grateful for. Start today. Write down 5 things that you are grateful for. 5 things that make you happy. Focus on those things and continue to do so for the rest of the week. Keep a journal by your bed and write them down first thing in the morning. It can be tiny things like loving the shadow being cast in from the morning sun, or happy that your hair is not messy. It doesn't matter. Make an inner wellness journal a top priority and I promise that you will have better days.
With this in mind, do not forget to also give thanks for what you don't have. It's easy to show gratitude for what we do have, but harder to be thankful for things we lack. Everything exists just as it is for a specific reason, and that reason will bring forth light at one point or another. Maybe today, maybe tomorrow, maybe ten years from now. Make today the day to find inner contentment with the world and remember that even when things are not playing out in your intended method, YOU can change the outcome. Be in control and be strong.
Make gratitude a priority, and the world will make you a priority.
