5 Reasons Thrifting is Better than the Mall
Wednesday, August 5, 2015
Dress: Fossil// Tank: H&M// Socks: Free People// Shoes: Urban Outfitters// Necklace: Street Scene Vintage// Rose: Farmer's Market
This dress (by Fossil!) is actually a thrift store find for $3. It's not perfect - it fits a little funny in the chest and the hem stays turned up, but it's imperfection is why it's perfect for me. I love the way it hangs, the way the wind causes the hem to drift ever so slightly. I love how it can be worn with flats, ankle boots, tights, and sweaters. I love how easy it is to style. And I always get compliments when I wear it. Being that several of my wardrobe staples are thrifted pieces, I decided it was time to share why thrifting is my preferred way of shopping. All cost benefits aside, here are 5 little reasons why I get joy from thrifting.
Finding something unique: At a thrift store I find items that feel like they were uniquely
made for me. Of course, it’s possible that many other people have the same dress,
but in the moment between you and your thrifted piece, there is only one. I like to feel like I have something different.
Quantity control: I don’t like to have overstuffed closets bursting with a
dozen sweaters and 40 dresses. I hate feeling like I am lost in a sea of
garments trying to decide what to wear. Because so often thrifting means
leaving with nothing, I only bring home items that made my eyes grow into
saucers and gleam like the moon. Some of my favorite clothes came from the
Goodwill.
Finding what I like vs what is trendy: It’s 2015. Why do trends still matter? Honestly, they’re a
little overwhelming…Forever 21 and H&M pull in new trends each
week. Each week, people! It really seems like a waste to
give your valuable time to clothing you don’t love just because a magazine or blog said you should wear it! You don’t have to wear crop tops
or wideleg pants if skinnies and tunics are your preferred go to outfit. Wear what you want and wear it with confidence. When thrift shopping, you get clothes from all sorts of trends long gone (and by long gone it really could have been last spring - or earlier). However, when you find something at a thrift store that you like, you're buying it because you really like it.
A lesson in patience: You honestly leave with nothing most of the time. This is ok
and even encouraged. Buying something just because it’s cheap is always a waste
of your money. However, when you find an item that you love, it feels all the more special.
A respect for reusing: Everything at the thrift store has been worn by other bodies
who determined the item was not a love match. Instead of contributing to the
tons of textiles clogging landfills, we reuse, recycle, and reduce
environmental strain.
What about you? Do love or hate thrifting? Do you have any thrifting tips you would like to share with us? I would love the hear your thoughts.

How to Wear a Cloche Hat in Contemporary Dress, Part 1
Monday, May 25, 2015
Shirt & Jeans: Lucky Brand// Shoes: Urban Outfitters// Hat: Anthropologie
Cloche hats are the essence of elegance. They remind of us of times long gone. Just looking at them makes me think of tea in gardens, old cocktail parties, fancy dress, and, to be perfectly honest, Downton Abbey (please tell me I'm not the only one using Downton Abbey as an excuse to be classy). So often though the style feels out of place with today's times. Cloche hats often feel a little weird with modern outfits and can definitely just look "off." I've owned this hat without figuring out the styling for... too long. Everything felt wrong about it... my clothes felt too complicated, my hair too long etc... Normally, I donate items this difficult, but I so badly wanted it to work! After much research, trial and error, and a lot of frustration, I think I have found the perfect solution. Are you ready to style a cloche hat and still head out to that trendy coffee shop feeling on point?
Here is your solution: keep clean lines. If you look at old flapper pictures, the 20s were the epitome of clean lines. You can still have boho details (God knows there were some intricacies!), like the lacing on this shirt, but as long as the lines are kept clean, a cloche hat will give your outfit a polished and classy appearance. Add some jewelry and you're all set!
What to do with your hair? If you have long hair, just give it a classic side braid! I imagine straightening it would work well too, but I have very thick, voluminous hair, so straightening will have to wait till winter sucks the humidity out of the air. For now though, I think you're going to be seeing the braid for a while.
I have other ideas for wearing cloche hats are well so I can't wait to share them with you! Isn't amazing how once you break through a barrier you suddenly realize tons of other options? How do you like to wear a cloche hat? Are you a hat person at all? Talk, talk, talk!
Been a Long Time Since I Rock n Rolled
Monday, December 1, 2014Dress:// Free People (old)// Shirt: H&M (similar)// Leggings://American Apparel// Socks: Urban Outfitters (similar)// Boots: Betsey Johnson (old)// Necklace: Anthropologie (old)
I have never fashioned it on this blog before, but this is my favorite fall/winter dress. It was one of my first clothing purchases made my early 20s and I still consider it to be one of my best purchases through the years. When I wear this dress, I feel youthful yet mature, free yet in control. Maybe it's the 70s vibe, but this dress made me feel like I just belonged in the aisles of our local record store this past Sunday. Like two halves forming a whole. There's nothing like browsing used records in a vintage looking number while blasting a little Led Zeppelin. What do you do to feel like you are stepping back a few decades?
